This is a strikingly good and very large cameo that shows Hermes (Mercury) taking the baby Bacchus to Ino. Bacchus was entrusted to Hermes by his father, Zeus.

Condition: Good used condition, there are some stress marks (please see photos). Some high points of carving are slightly rubbed.

This Victorian carved shell cameo is a rare, museum-quality piece in gold and comes complete with gold safety chain.

  • Hand-carved shell cameo brooch.
  • Sardonyx shell.
  • 19th-century period.
  • Gold surround in Greek key pattern (not marked but tested as 9K).
  • Very large. Approximately 67mm by 55mm or 2.6 inches high by 2.3 inches wide.
