This is a strikingly good and very large cameo that shows Hermes (Mercury) taking the baby Bacchus to Ino. Bacchus was entrusted to Hermes by his father, Zeus.
Condition: Good used condition, there are some stress marks (please see photos). Some high points of carving are slightly rubbed.
This Victorian carved shell cameo is a rare, museum-quality piece in gold and comes complete with gold safety chain.
- Hand-carved shell cameo brooch.
- Sardonyx shell.
- 19th-century period.
- Gold surround in Greek key pattern (not marked but tested as 9K).
- Very large. Approximately 67mm by 55mm or 2.6 inches high by 2.3 inches wide.
