Rare 19th century antique puppet/Marionette that we purchased from a famous English collection. He is believed to have been a character in a performance of Faust.
Wonderful wooden puppet with beautifully carved, very expressive head. The whole costume is interesting, with the carved, pleated boots being of particular note - there are traditional in central European folk costume.
You can see boots like this used in one of our fairytale photoshoots (close up at about 0.44 seconds).
We were told that this marionette is Viennese, but we think it could equally possibly be Czech - certainly it's from the Austro-Hungarian empire. We'd estimate it to be mid to late 19th century.
This is a very large puppet at 64cm x 18cm x 9cm.
Please note that this is a genuine antique piece and the painted parts and fabrics show their age, though all in all they are in remarkably good condition.
We will pack very carefully and we would recommend insurance.
